What is Facial Cleansing Oil and why do you need to start using it immediately?!

What is facial cleansing oil and why do you need to start using it immediately?

What is facial cleansing oil?

So, have y’all heard of facial cleansing oil? You have, right? If you haven’t, where in the world have you been? Well, it’s having a moment right now, a big moment. I’ve been using the oil cleansing method for about three years now, and I can tell you that my skin has really never looked better. Now, I know what you’re thinking…you’re thinking that you are trying to get rid of oil on your face, not make it greasy and oily and yucky, right? You also may be thinking that I am a crazy hippie lady and I don’t know wtf I’m talking about, but listen you guys, I do know about this, trust me. My skin issues have been well documented all along this journey that I’m on right now and I have tried everything, so let’s chat about it. I’m sure I can get y’all to come around to my way of thinking (a Southern girl specialty!) Continue reading What is Facial Cleansing Oil and why do you need to start using it immediately?!

5 Common Ingredients In Skin Care Products To Avoid

Ingredients in skin care products to avoid. Drawing of female scientist standing in front of half filled beakers

So, a recent conversation with a dear friend brought up a great question. We were talking about her using the birth control patch and she made the comment, “Well the hormones just get right in there, directly through my skin”, which made me think about what else might be getting right in there, directly through our skin…you know, the largest organ of your body that absorbs everything? Now I know that we are all likely on some version of the no carbs/no gluten/no sugar/no processed food, (except maybe cheese which I cannot live without)/no artificial dyes/all organic, blah, blah, blah bandwagon, right? But are you still using chemical laden, hormone disrupting, allergy inducing products on your skin? Think about why the birth control patch works. Because the hormones are absorbed directly into our bloodstream! And so are all of the nasty chemicals that you find in many skincare products, (Chemicals you won’t find in any of our All Natural Sweet Georgia Sugar products).

The other thing to keep in mind is the fact that a lot of these chemicals can cause breakouts/discoloration/dry patches, etc., often aggravating the very condition that you are trying to treat. For example:

7 Denver small businesses to buy from this holiday season

7 denver local businesses to buy from this holiday season

Ugh, you guys, is it Holiday time again ALREADY? Didn’t we JUST do this? I don’t want to seem like a scrooge who hates Christmas or anything, but…I might be a scrooge who hates Christmas. Just kidding, mostly. I mean, it isn’t the actual holiday that I hate, it’s all the stuff leading up to the holiday…like shopping and cleaning and trying to figure out what to get that one person in the family who either already has everything or who hates everything, (y’all know who I mean).

And y’all, I LOVE giving presents. I mean it, I love it. My mother was one of the great present-givers of her generation and I like to think that I inherited at least a little bit of that. She always knew exactly the right gift to give at exactly the right time. She would give me things that I didn’t even know I desperately needed until I received them, (for example: a collection of marble, ceramic and gemstone eggs…that’s right, I said eggs. I am prone to anxiety and holding those little spheres in my hand calms me down like magic, you should try it.)

Anyway, because of my hatred of shopping coupled with my need to give the perfect gift, I an obsessed with Gift Guides. I will read ALL of them to try and find the cleverest you-didn’t-know-you-needed-it-until-I-gave-it-to-you gift. And as we face yet another gift-giving season, I realized that since starting my own business, I have come to know so many cool small business owners who have amazing, sentimental, practical, silly, fun, beautiful things to offer. So I decided to put together the Sweet Georgia Sugar Local Gift Guide for you lovlies to peruse so that you can find that perfect gift for that one person who hates everything. And remember, when you shop from this list, you are helping to support a small business and someone’s dream…and that’s a gift in itself. What Cancer Treatment Does To Skin & What Can Be Done About It

What Cancer Treatment Does To Skin & What you can do about it

So those of you who follow my blog regularly know that Breast Cancer Awareness Month holds a special place in my heart due to the fact that we lost our dear, sweet Mama 10 years ago after a long breast cancer battle. And just in the past few months, I’ve had several close friends who have dealt with either the passing of a parent or the diagnosis of someone close to them. It’s so scary, you guys. And so devastating in a million different ways. The patient not only has to deal with the shock of being diagnosed, and the fear of what comes next, but also with a myriad of other issues. Cancer truly affects every single aspect of your life. From the financial worries about how to pay for treatment and how to cover expenses if you have to be out of work for an extended period of time, to the practical concerns about keeping up with laundry and meals and housework, to the frightening and difficult conversations that must be had with children and loved ones. And then there is a physical toll as well, whether it is due to cancer itself, or the treatments…everything changes. Continue reading What Cancer Treatment Does To Skin & What Can Be Done About It

Nine Ways to Upcycle Our Natural Body Butter and Body Scrub Jars

A pile of reusable plastic 8 oz jars

Listen y’all…I try to practice what I preach. I mean to practice what I preach.I want to practice what I preach. Especially when it comes to environmental issues. I am a passionate recycler. If I can make it out of something that I already have instead of buying it new, I will do that, (you guys should see all of the headbands, bracelets, infinity scarves I have made from scraps of material)…oh, and T-shirt pillows! We may have too many of those laying around, actually. I shop almost exclusively at thrift stores, for everything I wear, (except underwear, ew), I don’t even like going to the mall or a department store, especially for something that I could easily find at Goodwill, (and which would be about a million times more unique), because it feels so wasteful to me.

Anyway, this is all a preface to telling you about how the other day when I was cleaning my workspace, I came across a box (a big box, y’all), that I had shoved under my desk that contained about a billion plastic jars and lids. And it was then that I realized that I had become part of the problem. I experiment a lot. I make stuff and then I like to let it sit for awhile to make sure that the jar doesn’t leak, to make sure the scent is right, that kind of thing. I also go through at least one jar of our All Natural Lavender Body Scrub per week, (Have you guys tried this? So relaxing! Get some!) and one jar of our All Natural Rose Vanilla Body Butter, and instead of being the good recycler that I strive to be, I was just throwing the empty jars in this box under my desk. WTF, right? Now, our jars ARE recyclable, but I got to thinking…are there other things that I could do with them? Are they useful in some way? Could they be decorative? So I challenged myself to come up with a few unique ways that we could reuse these jars. That’s right, I said we. I know y’all have empty jars sitting around too, so let’ make things useful, yeah? (and pretty, don’t forget pretty). Continue reading Nine Ways to Upcycle Our Natural Body Butter and Body Scrub Jars

How our natural skin care products will help you beat the heat!

Sweet Georgia Sugar All Natural Body Scrub Jar

I’m Dying of Heatstroke, Y’all

So, it’s been a long, hot summer so far, am I right? My hatred of the summer months has been well-documented, so I know that you all can probably feel my suffering from wherever you are. And when I get too hot…well, I also get a little bit cranky, (and by cranky, I mean the B-word with a big ol’ capital B, you guys). And it is hot here in Denver. My grass is dying, my vegetable garden is a sad, brown mess, (though, that could be because I’m too lazy to water it), and I don’t have air conditioning. THE HORROR. I mean, it was 94 degrees yesterday and when I took a stroll by my thermostat, I noticed that it was 88 degrees inside the dang house. How can I be expected to conduct business and make stuff and tweet stuff and do stuff when it is that hot? I felt like Scarlett O’Hara at that picnic, you know when she fainted because of the heat? And I’m not even wearing a corset and stockings and a 40 lb dress and a big hat. It’s just too much.

So this morning, I had planned to get up at the crack of dawn to shower before the inside of my house became an oven, but when my alarm went off at 6am, I may have hit snooze a few times. Maybe for two hours or something like that. Maybe. Anyway, by the time I got up, it was 83 degrees in my house already and I thought that all was lost. 5 alternate uses for our all natural skin care products

5 alternate uses for our all natural skin care products

So the other day, I’m sitting out on my patio, enjoying the weird summer/spring going on in Denver right now, when my daughter comes out of the house dressed in her typical style of gypsy bag lady, (y’all..brown gouchos with a pink skirt OVER them and a teal blue tank top with a sparkly silver scarf and Hello Kitty flip flops). She wanted to show me that she did her own hair. Now, usually what that means is, she gathered up all the tangles and tied them into a bun, making it virtually impossible for me to untangle it later without a lot of wine (me) and tears (her). But this time, her hair looked…well…great. It was shiny and smooth and sleek and pretty. And she smelled lovely. So I asked her how she managed this feat and she said “Oh, I just put some Sweet Georgia Sugar in it”. Wait. What? So she explained that she just used a little body butter and the tangles “fell right out”. You don’t say? So I started thinking about the different ways that I use our products in my own beauty routine and thought I’d share a few with you guys: Continue reading 5 alternate uses for our all natural skin care products

The reasons we use Shea in our Body Butter and Eye Cream (Being a buzzword isn’t one of them.)

Reasons we use shea

So, I’ve been noticing that Shea butter is having a moment right now. There are new products popping up all over creation for everything from skin cream to cosmetics to hair products. Now, as y’all know, the best body butters and Eye Creams are made with Shea, which is why we use it as our main ingredient in these products, but even before I started making products to sell, I used it in all sorts of home remedies. It’s amazing for eczema and various skin ailments, as well as minor cuts and scrapes and burns too. You can even eat it if you want, (a fact that my 12 year old son can attest to, as he took that sentence as a direct challenge and scooped up a big glob of our orange clove body butter to try. He said it needed sugar). Anyway, it’s obvious that as consumers become more informed about their personal care products, ingredients like Shea are going to become more and more prevalent. But, just like with everything else, all Shea is not created equal, (or at least not when it’s mixed with a bunch of other stuff). Here are some fun facts to help you stay informed and make the right choice for your skin: Continue reading The reasons we use Shea in our Body Butter and Eye Cream (Being a buzzword isn’t one of them.)

The mystery of my suddenly growing eyelashes.

A picture of my newly grown eyelashes

So listen, y’all, something CRAZY just happened to me and I have to share. I will preface this by saying that I am one of those girls who was NOT blessed with long, luxurious, thick eyelashes. In fact, I have been known to apply THREE different kinds of mascara on a daily basis, (thickening, lengthening, conditioning), just to make it look like I even have eyelashes. So, imagine my surprise when, during my morning makeup routine, I suddenly noticed that I HAVE EYELASHES. Long eyelashes, you guys, gigantic, even, (my daughter says they look like “spider legs”, please see the drawing above for her interpretation). They only required one coat of one kind of mascara. WTF, right?

IMG 2551 226x300 - The mystery of my suddenly growing eyelashes.

So my mind immediately starts running through the possibilities: is my water radioactive or something? Am I going to start growing hair in all sorts of weird places (please, God, no), have my actual prayers from 10th grade been answered, (not soon enough for prom, but still), did I eat something weird? WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO ME? I went through a list in my head of anything new that I may have added or subtracted from my beauty routine and guess what? I wear approximately 97 layers of mascara and sometimes my regular oil cleansing method doesn’t take it all off. Several weeks ago, I noticed that my already short eyelashes seemed to be breaking off or something, so I started using my eye cream to remove my eye makeup. I thought the combination of shea butter and coconut oil would work together to break down the makeup and then I would be able to gently wipe it off, (and get some bonus moisturizing at the same time). It totally worked! The coconut oil basically liquefied the mascara and made it very easy to remove, and it didn’t irritate my allergy-prone eyes at all. Hey…wait…WAS IT THE COCONUT OIL??? At first, I was skeptical. I mean I LOVE coconut oil. I have touted its benefits here many times, but was it making my eyelashes grow? So, I took to the interwebs to find out and here is what I learned: Continue reading The mystery of my suddenly growing eyelashes.
