Baby Your Baby

So it’s Spring, y’all, (I mean theoretically. I live in Colorado, so we could have the Blizzard of the Century at any moment from now through May), and I’ve noticed that a lot of my friends and customers are expecting little bundles of joy, (guess everyone was busy last fall, yeah?). Babies are so cute, and so soft, and they have such delicate skin. When you have a baby, you want to buy every baby product that you see. I know I did when I had my babies. You WANT to buy the sweet-smelling lotion and moisturizing baby wipes and the lavender scented baby powder. But you guys? I’m here to ruin it for you. Sorry (not sorry). All of those commercial baby products have the same awful, carcinogenic, poisonous, potentially harmful ingredients that I’ve been harping about in our grown up products. Let’s talk about just a few of these:

Harmful Ingredients: Dioxins and sodium polyacrylate

Bad News: These two chemicals have been linked to the following toxic responses: cancer, respiratory problems, hormonal imbalances, suppressed immune system and allergic reactions. Your baby will be wearing a diaper for 24 hours a day for at least the first two years. Our skin is our largest organ, absorbing everything. Think about it.

Good News: There are so many alternatives to disposable diapers these days. And most of them are not only safer, but they are cheaper as well. Try these instead:

Baby Wipes

Harmful Ingredients:Formaldehyde,Nitrosamines, Tocopheryl , Fragrance.

Bad News: These are all bad, bad, bad y’all. Trust me. We’ve talked about this before. These substances can cause cancer, skin irritation, hormonal imbalances, allergic reactions, blah, blah, blah, you know the drill. You don’t want that on your sweet baby’s skin.

Good News: You can make your own! I know, I know, you’re busy. You just had a baby. You’re tired, I get it. But it’s easy. I promise. Go here:  and do everything she says. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy.

Baby Powder

Harmful Ingredients: Hydrous magnesium silicate, (also known as talc), Synthetic fragrances

Bad News: Talc can cause breathing problems in babies because the particles are small enough to reach the lungs. Synthetic fragrances can cause all kinds of irritation. And the dumb part is that it really doesn’t prevent diaper rash.

Good News: If you feel compelled to powder your baby’s little bottom, just use cornstarch. Or, while you are making baby wipes, check this out and make your own healing powder:

Baby Lotion

Harmful Ingredients: Sodium stearoyl lactylate, cetearyl alcohol, fragrance.

Bad News: Second verse, same as the first…these are all bad, y’all. They cause skin irritation, hormonal disruptions, breathing problems. Nope.

Good News: Use coconut oil, you guys. It smells nice and it’s great for your skin, (test it first to make sure your little one is not allergic). Or try some Sweet Georgia Sugar unscented lotion:

I know that’s a lot of info, you guys. And if you are expecting a baby, I know it seems overwhelming. But it’s really simple: if you can’t pronounce it, don’t put it on your baby.

And here’s some more unsolicited parenting advice: just do what feels natural, don’t let your mother-in-law boss you around, sleeping when the baby sleeps is impossible so don’t listen to people who tell you to do that, the five second rule is a real thing, and most importantly, just trust yourself and love that baby, you’re gonna be great. Trust.
